Who Let The Dogs Out

I am a proud dog owner, but not the kind as you know it. I have a puppy. Magis puppy. A rare pedigree in black glossy. Imported. I don't take my puppy for walks... because it doesn't need to be walked.

Designed by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio, the puppy is part of the "me too collection" of children's furniture and accessories from Magis. This adorable abstract plastic dog is constructed of hard polyethylene that is suitable for indoor or outdoor use. It is a sculpture, a toy, a small stool, whatever you want it to be.

Here's a picture of my puppy and its family. Mine is second from the left. It is a medium sized puppy standing at 45cm tall.

The relatives in different shades... even a glow in the dark species!

In 2007, 12 designers and artists from different disciplines in Singapore collaborated with Xtra Living. They each dressed up a Magis Puppy for a charity auction in support of ASD (Action for Singapore Dogs). These are my five favourite puppies.

In 2008, to raise money for Breast Cancer research, six respected design firms and one Brisbane school created eight very different looking plastic puppies. Sponsored by ECC Lighting + Furniture the puppy4life campaign set the task for the different groups to transform their white Magis Puppies into new individual creations. These one-off designer pieces have been sold and the campaign has raised a total of A$4466 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The last puppy was inspired by ‘I wish, I wish, I wish I was… I wish I was a horse.’ I think the designer was thinking of Front's design for Moooi - The Horse Lamp.
